Could Microsoft Still Be Making A Halo Movie?

It seems that when it comes to games, Microsoft is pretty laid back — because frankly when your franchise has earned over $2 billion in profit they can afford to. I would be one of those people who love the games, and would welcome a big screen adaption of Bungie‘s popular games, Halo. But what mystifies me the most is, if the games are so popular, why they are holding back when it comes to bringing the master-chief to the silver-screen.

I know that a while back they hit a snag with production, and it was halted for a time — but now I, along with fans early await any news of the on-screen adaption of the games to get itself into production and in cinemas. Thanks to Variety we have a new development, that Microsoft is still looking into going about several budding new scripts by Alex Garland, Stuart Beattie, D.B. Weiss and Josh Olson.

In the article, Halo series director (of the games) Frank O’Conner said, “We’re still interested in making an excellent ‘Halo’ movie,” O’Connor said. “We’ve created an awful lot of documentation and materials to support a feature film. We have a good idea of what kind of story we want to tell, but won’t move on it until there’s a great reason to do it. We’re in no particular hurry.”

So this means that at least they’re saving the image of the games and not just punching out a quick and cheap adaption, which will keep the fans happy — but they’re still not getting anywhere fast. O’Connor also confirmed that the film will in fact be a stand-alone film and not just a re-cap of the games so far, which is good in ways — theres nothing worse than a scene by scene reenactment of a game or book made into a film. Its just lame. And Halo isn’t lame, it deserves the respect of the film makers, and in ways I’m glad that they’re keeping it in Microsoft and not selling the rights.

Its clear they intend to make the film, but when is still unclear, as for cast and crew no one would have the foggiest idea aside from preferences — and we all have those. Mine would have to be Sir Peter Jackson, keep Weta involved that’s what I say!
