Like most of the movie blogging/news community we’ve been keeping a close eye on the progress of the upcoming Judge Dredd movie, mostly in angst because the last was — excuse the french butter utter horse shit. And who can blame us, we where all holding our breathe until last month when we heard that Star Trek star Karl Urban will be taking title role in the latest adaption of the popular 2000 AD comic Judge Dredd.
Its not huge, but to give us a little taster of what to expect this time round (referring to the Stallone film) we have a synopsis and a revised title that studio IM Global have just released. They will now be calling there film DREDD, or as some earlier reports suggest DREDD 3D depending on the 3D option — personally I think we could do with a break from digital 3D because frankly its just not worth the extra few bucks…and thats saying allot.
Here we have a premature synopsis of the film from the studio, and really this doesn’t say anything much more than we already know:
– DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.
See what I mean, apart from the title and the confirmation that Urban is definitely our Dredd, its not saying much in the way of plot or story-line. But what’s good to hear is that they will be sticking to the darker tone of the comics that we love so much — and that any and all aspects of the Stallone incarnation will be stomped out existence. Plot-wise we have nothing new, aside from the comics outline to go from — go on Wikipedia and you’ll get the basic gist of it but as for details, thats for your mind to imagine.
DREDD will be based on a screenplay by Alex Garland (28 Days Later), and judging by the synopsis it will be going on the source material, saying it will be a “futuristic neo-noir action film” and will be a “dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip” Which sounds awesome to me.
Speaking of source material — according to Variety director Peter Travis will be bringing some other original comic-only characters to the equation, such as Cassandra Anderson a.k.a Judge Anderson who will be played by Olivia Thirlby for the reboot. Her character being a telepath, and shadow of title character Dredd (Urban) So far casting has been minimal, with Urban and Thirlby the only two officially slated in — but really its only up-hill from here.
It seems that the reasonably minuscule pre-production that has gone on up-to now has ‘Judge Dredd’ comic-book creator John Wagner excited — along with long-time reader Urban who both seem to share the same affinity for the project. I would to agree, I mean who better for the role than New Zealands’s own Karl Urban! And although we haven’t seen much, if anything at all, Im really impressed…..so far. So lets just hope that we don’t get a relapse of the Dreaded 1995 Stallone effort, thats it from me and the production of DREDD. Stay tuned for more info and news as it comes!
