Capital Punishment At It’s Best! Karl Urban Will Take The Mantle Of Honorable Judge Dredd In Second Film Adaption!

All rise for the honorable Judge Dredd! Its been a while since this years San Diego Comic-Con and its been one hell of an after math of news and rumors surrounding comics and their film adaption counter-parts — and the latest to be added to the mix is upcoming 2000AD’s comic-strip turned film Judge Dredd.

A few weeks back, Kiwi actor Karl Urban, who we last saw on the silver-screen for J.J. AbramsStar Trek as lovable Doc Leonard ‘Bones’ McCoy, revealed (to anyone listening) that he will indeed be playing honorable Judge Dredd — in a second attempt at bringing the titular Judge to the big screen, after Sylvester Stallone‘s less than honorable attempt in 1995. And everyone seemed to take him on his word, as Urban is usually very open to upcoming roles — but it seems as Empire felt the need to take one step further and dig into producers for confirmation…and what’d you know he’s telling the truth – how enlightening!

But all sarcasm aside Empire had a little chat with producer Andrew Macdonald, who said “We’ve cast a guy called Karl Urban to play Dredd,” for who we have gotten an amazing performance in The Lord Of The Rings films and the latest Star Trek re-imaging. “We’ll be shooting in Johannesburg, it’s being directed by Pete Travis, we’re shooting with the people who did District 9 – and if we get it right, Alex has a couple of ideas for other stories as well. It’s not based on any one comic, and John Wagner is involved in every decision.”

Also Macdonald reassured us that all elements that made the Stallone Dredd film as bad as it did, have been removed entirely and promised a new and grittier film: “Our idea is to make a very hard, R-rated, gritty, realistic movie of Dredd in Megacity, so we’ve got to get the tone right. He’s not going to take off his helmet. His bike is going to feel real. He’s going to hit people and it’s going to feel real.” So far as reassurances go, Im sold! But I wouldn’t get to ahead of myself as Urban hasn’t been in too many films, but since we’ll be seeing some more news we can only wait and see. Also Empire suggests that Judge Dredd will set to start shooting this fall, so stay tuned for more info as it comes!
